Cape Town residency with Conrad Hicks
2018
Beautifully graphic and iconically South African, corrugated metal became the subject of the work we developed during our residency in Cape Town.
Corrugated metal is a very iconic material to the South African landscape and is found in traditional, contemporary and informal architecture. One of the main topics we explored whilst working with this material, was how to lift the negative associations attached to this beautifully graphic material.
At The Bijou, artist Conrad Hicks' studio, we experimented with the material in various techniques like rolling, folding, soldering and riveting. We felt the production should be kept simple and accessible as these are some of the qualities which make this material so widespread.
We also worked alongside local businesses and craftsmen who shared a common affection to this material to produce the prototypes.
